Researching and experiencing motivation: a plea for ‘balanced research’

Na Li

Centre for English Language Teacher Education, University of Warwick, UK, lina7936{at}gmail.com

Intrigued by van Lier’s call for ‘balanced teaching’, I come up with a proposal of ‘balanced research’. In this paper, I describe my personal involvement in a four-month teaching/data-gathering experience (as a part of my doctoral research project on task motivation) which shows that it both necessitates and ends up involving such a ‘balanced’ approach. Meanwhile, ‘Exploratory Practice’, as a set of general principles for practitioner research, offers great support for my joint teacher/researcher enterprise as well.
